Can't join Domain

By gdsich ·
Hi

I just installed a Win2k Server on an IBM x340 series Server and I'm having problems joining my existing domain. Everytime I change my "Member of" settings and type in the domain name I get prompted to put my username then password. However once this is entered I get an error which says "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain name": The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I'm having problems understanding why this is happening because I can see my domain in Network Neighboorhood and can also access all the pc's and servers in it.

Can anyone please help?

Did you install win2K server as a stand alone server, and tell it you wanted to join an existing domain?

If you're domain is win2k, then recheck the dns settings on your server. When you try to join, dns will be referenced for an srv record to indicate a DC. If no record is found, or dns cannot be contacted, then you'll get that message. If you are running an NT4 domain, then ensure that your server has a wins server specified (the same one used by your pdc, or a replication partner of it). In NT4 your server will query wins for a <1C> entry (IE the PDC), again if the wins server cannot be reachedyou will get an error. NOTE that in each case (WINS and DNS) it is a specific type record that is looked for - IE being able to ping the pdc \ 2000 DC by name doesn't always mean that the correct record types are available. Hope this helps.

Just one more thing to check. When joining a W2K Domain always use the full domain name eg: your server name is george and your domain name is admin.com you would enter george.admin.com. Try that and see if it work, I had the same problem because I was only using the single name.

When you install AD it asks for a Netbios Domain name, if your DNS is NOT configured properly you can put in the netbios domain name to connect.
good luck

If you are tring to get into an NT 4.0 server and maybe even 2000 server, it sometimes works to logon to the local machine as admin, and then change the workgroup name to whatever you want, let it reboot, and then go back in and join the domain. It sounds strange but it works, I am still looking in to the cause of this problem myself.
