Can't kill email job in Exchange 5.5

I'm not an Exchange Guru but have been administring a small site for a while. A user sent an email with a 16Mbyte attachement (Sage backup!!) to an external recipient. The job apparently has completed in the past but never reached the recipient. Once started I don't seem to be able to stop it by deleting from the message queue under Exchange Admin-Connections-Servers-<Name>-Logons-Internet Mail Service then the Queue pagetab.

I remove the item then refresh and it disappears. But the job keeps sending over the modem (dialup support to ISP). I start and stop the IMS, the job reappears in the queue and it starts sending again. How do I remove an email from the system like this.

I am not on site today but the MD there has reportedthat the job appeared to finish overnight (yes we had to leave it running) but started again for half an hour at 1000hrs when the scheduled email download was requested. However there was no job in the queue (that he could see).
