Can't log in domain (password too long?)

By Josep_M ·
I have a Win98 client that log in a Win2K Server domain. On the Server there is no problems with passwords. But on the client, when an user enter the password, It's OK
But when the Administrator enter the password, he can't logon!
The Administrator password has 17 characters
Is there a solution for use a long password on Win98?
Thans a lot

You know, I haven't had to deal with 98 in a networked environment for a while, and for that I am thankful. I seem to remember the max password length being close to NT's max length, 14 or 15 characters. I bet what is happening is you are entering in the 17 characters and 98 is concatenating the password, chopping off the end. Basically, there isn't anything to do except change the password on the NT PDC to something shorter, synchronize the domain, then try again from the 98 box with the new, shorter password.I think I ran into this once a while ago.
Hope this helps.

windows 98 is limited to 14 characters for a password. And there is no getting around it.
Sorry

Typical Microsoft to have differing standards on their OS's.

The short answer is no.
The fact is that any system has to go with the lowest common factor (unless you can do what samba does on Linux, performing password mangaling and only taking the first N characters to be relevant)

The longer answer is, do you realy need a 17 character password, using a good combination of alphanumerics, 8-10 characters would be plenty good enough to keep out the the unwanted !
