Can't log into Network

By NLane126 ·
I'm having a problem getting into the network, I uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapter and set everything up again with Network wizard. Under status it shows connected, speed 100Mbbps Activity sent 58 received -0- when I click on repair, It says the following steps of the repair operation failed renewing the IP address please contact your network adminstrator or ISP I turned off the firewall and I still couldn't get it to log into the network. I rebooted computer and keep getting Cannot find server. I then ran cmd ipconfig /all and I get IP address 169.254.200.178 then release ipconfig /release and I get the same number knowing it should be all 0's then ipconfig /renew and it say An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Conection 2= An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. But when I disconnect it from the computer it says A network cable is unplugged so what's the verdict how do I fix it.

It sounds like your card is picking up just a default address and not actually getting an IP.

Is this on a home network? Peer to peer?

Do can you ping your router?

Can you ping outside?

First of all you should have a firewall. Any PC connected to net
on a direct connecttion such as cable or DSL will be violated
within as little as 20 min according to SANS.

That said, you are getting a self assigned address. That is what
happens when the NIC cannot find a DHCP server. Has this
config worked in the past and what is the OS? If so then your
settings should be fine. Reboot the modem and then try the
ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew. If that fails then go to your
network properties and right click the LAN connection. Make
sure it is enabled. Does it mention Repair anywhere? You may
just want to run the network configuration wizard again.

Good Luck,

razz

Yes I turned off the firewall to see if I could get on the net, that was the only reason. I have XP and I have tried all of that ipconfig/renew and release. Still didn't work It does say enabled and I did the repair and it still didn't work It says the following steps of the repair operation failed renewing the IP address please contact your network adminstrator or ISP.

I've gotten this error when the TCP/IP stack got corrupted. The following Microsoft Technet Article explains how to reset you stack:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318584

I would highly recommend that you do a full virus and spyware scan as soon as possible, there's a good chance that an autodialer has been installed on you machine.

Hope this helps...

I went to the site and started everything but when I got to the part about uninstalling the Internet Protocol that option was not there only install.

Uninstall the TCP/IP protocol. To do this, follow these steps: a. In Control Panel, click Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
b. Under Components checked are used by this connection, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Uninstall.
c. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall TCP/IP.

10. Restart your computer, and then reinstall TCP/IP if it is not installed automatically: a. In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
b. Click Install.
c. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.
d. Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) under Network Protocol, and then click OK.
e. Follow the on-screen instructions to install TCP/IP.

11. Reset your modem by turning the power off and then on.
12. Test your Internet connectivity.

I've had similar issues with a couple of new XPs. By any chance do you have Norton Antivirus installed? I believe it somehow affects the ports. In 3 instances my connection problems were resolved by uninstalling Norton Antivirus and then re-installing it after the network connections were established. I don't know why it works ... only that is has. Good luck
