Can’t login to NT domain over DSL VLAN

by dkmoody . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

I have a client with two sites connected by 144k DSL VLAN. I can consistently ping an NT4 server (the only server on the network and acting as PDC) located in home office from Win98 workstations in remote office using both IP address and NetBIOS name. The remote site is very small (only three stations) so we’re not using DNS or WINS. We are using LMHOSTS on the Win98 PC’s.

When either of the three stations boot and tries to log into the domain they get the “No domain server was available to validate your password” error message. We click cancel and go to the Win98 desktop. If I try to browse Network Neighborhood, the domain isn’t available to browse, nor is the NT server.

If I do a [Start > Find > Computers > server_name > Find Now] the server is found every time. I can then browse the server and access all the shares on the server

Any thoughts as to why I cant log on and/or what to do to solve the problem?
