Can't modify SETUP.LOG

By bpsaltry ·
Greetings,

When attempting to update from WinNt Sp4 to SP6a, I'm getting the message that it can't modify the SETUP.LOG file. Following MS's article, Q175960, I've attempted to first create the Repair directory in the WinNt directory (which was not present) and then create the SETUP.LOG file within that directory with entries:

[Files.WinNt]
\%Systemroot%\System32\Hal.dll="hal.dll","d023"

[Paths]
TargetDirectory="\%Systemroot%"

replacing \%Systemroot%\ _with_ \WinNt\

I'm still getting the same message, unable to modify SETUP.LOG.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Can't modify SETUP.LOG

It sounds like the file has the "Read Only" attribute set. Open it in windows explorer and remove all check marks under properties and then do the upgrade.

There are different things that could be happening to you:

.- Your setup.log is Read Only (change it and make it R/W
.- Your setup.log is damaged (get a backup copy of it)
.- You don't have enough rights to modify it, it means you can not install Service Pack (Login as Administrator or equivalent)

I hope it helps,
Good luck,
@lberto
