Can't open files in Excel 03 by clicking

By gsawyer ·
Get an error " Cannot find the file ...." with path name. The file will open from within Excel. This is described in MS article 296055 but their solution does not work. Any suggestions?
By the way, why no MS office 2003 category here in Tech Republic?

Hi,

Its not a shortcut your clicking on is it. If it is recreate the shortcut, or just go straight to the file.

Sounds like the computer is confused about how to open the .xls files. Might try re-establishing the "File Types" association.
Open "My Computer" click on "tools" from the top menu, then click "Folder Options" click on "File Types" tab, scroll down until you find the .XLS (and any other Excel file types) and re-associate them with Microsoft Excel as the program to use to open them by clicking on the file type, then click "Change" and either pick the program from the list or "Browse" to the executable (For 2003, I think it's default is c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe
