Can't Ping from the server

By ugggghhhh ·
I'm having difficulties Pinging other workstations from the server. It can ping itself by using the server assigned tcp/ip address or 127.0.0.1 Other workstations can ping the server and other workstations. NETBUI and TCP/IP are running and TCP/IP is at the top level. Running Win NT4.0 SP6. Any ideas?

Check to insure that the subnet is correct, also (because this is a microsoft operating system) try removing NETBEUI.

Well, not really an answer. I need more information. What is the IP address and subnet mask of the server and one or two workstations. You mentioned server assigned IP address, are you using DHCP? What about WINS, DNS, and LMHOST files?

It sounds like your TCP/IP settings may be incorrect. Make sure your Server is pointing to the right subnet mask, gateway etc. Also make sure that DNS and WINS are correct.
If you are pinging the server's IP adress from itself it really doesn't mean much, just that the nic is alive and well. According to what you are saying 127.0.0.1 is replying... That is the loopback address, not the server's IP address. If your Workstations can ping the server the problem is on that server or a firewall inbetween. I am really not sure how your network is set up so I can't say for sure, but I would bet on the TCP/IP protocol settings being wrong.
Hope it helped....

Since NETBEUI is also running you should be able to see if all the workstations are listed in network neihbourhood . If all workstaions are listed then you might need to remove TCP / IP and then reinstall it . Sometime corrupted Protocol drivers cause similar problems . If you cannot see the workstations in network neighbourhood try finding then using start menu / Find ( use the netbios names ). If you fail to find the workstations then you might have a problem with the NIC drivers . You can try reinstalling them .
