Can't ping my XP machines

By palkovic ·
I have two XP machines at home wired into a Linksys WRT54G router. Wireless is fine. Internet access is fine. But the two boxes wired into the back of it cannot see each other. Both are running XP home. All firewalls are off. All TCP/IP looks fine. I even reached a point where I could ping the one machine and have Zonealarm block the request. Turned off Zonealarm, still no go. Windows firewalls are turned off. I would delete the TCP/IP and reinstall, but you cannot delete TCP/IP from XP. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ensure your TCP/IP information is correct ie address and subnet mask also that the router is the default gateway. If router is so config you can also use it as your DNS server. If all is correct try putting machine info in HOSTS file then ping by both IP and Machine name.

ICMP messages may be disabled on either XP Machines or on the router itself.

For XP machines:
1. Open Properties of Local Area Connection
2. Click Advanced, Settings, Advanced
3. ICMP Settings
4. Enable 'Allow incoming echo request'

What is the DNS that the router is passing out to your machines?
Ensure that all the machines are getting a DNS IP address of the router. If some are getting the router and other getting an IP that looks completely different then your router is passing out the global DNS to your clients. Set your router to pass out DNS as itself or set static IP's on the machines with DNS pointed at the router and try again (To find DNS IP, go to 'Start>run>cmd' the command is 'ipconfig /all'. Make sure all the machines are on the same workgroup, and have you tried accessing them by machine name? Start>Run>\\computername
