Can't Place Icons on Desktop in XP

By Ken Bass ·
In the course of trying to restore the Recycle Bin icon to my XP desktop (I had used TweakUI to hide it), I now cannot make ANY icon visible on the desktop. The checkmark by Recycle Bin in TweakUI can be checked (box not grayed out) but has no effect, and appears unchecked after a reboot. Also, creating a new shortcut on the desktop creates a .lnk in my Desktop folder in \Documents and Settings, but the icon for the shortcut is not visible on the actual desktop.

How can I restore icon visibility to my desktop?

you may have accidentally enabled view desktop as web page and therefore hidden all desktop icons.

Active desktop is always enabled in XP, so I can't turn it off, but I do not have a web page selected in the "Web" tab of the "Desktop" section of the box that appears when you right click the desktop and choose "Properties". This answer might have been more helpful if it contained directions for disabling "view desktop as web page".

Have you tried a "System Restore?" In case you haven't:

>Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools >System Restore >Radio Button for "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time >Next >Click a *bolded* date on the calendar (you can change the calendar month via the arrows). A list of *System Checkpoint* times will appear on the right. >Select a checkpoint time for the restore. >Next

NOTE: > = Select

Meant to say: Restore the computer to a time prior to the date you hid the Recycle Bin icon.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already tried that, all the way back as far as any restore points existed. No luck.

Here is microsoft's answer regarding the recycle bin. The answer may involve editing your registry but all the steps are there. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I ran this one down myself while thinking I had a specific problem with the Recycle Bin. Trying to implement the Workaround in this article is what revealed that NO ICON AT ALL could be made visible on my desktop (not even a new shortcut), not just the Recycle Bin. I am certain that Recycle Bin will reappear as soon as the root issue is discovered and resolved. Thank you for your help - you have followed the same path I have!

Try unistalling Tweak UI, the changes made w/ the utility will return to the O.S. "as installed" state, then if you wish, grab the latest issue of Tweak UI & re-install the utility and set it as you wish.

Good Luck.

Tried this just on the off chance, but no change. I didn't think it would, as the fix is really pointed at restoring the Recycle Bin. However, the real problem is that no icon at all, not even a shortcut, can be made visible on the desktop.

First off, are you using the power toys version of TweakUI, or version 1.33? If you've got the power toy version, uninstall it, install v1.33, and try the rebuild icons function. If this doesn't work, let me know, I'll do the same thing to one of mine, and see if I can't fix it.
