Can't Preview all my picture files

By jtpaderes ·
I have a PC with Windows XP installed. Now my problem is, all my picture files (jpg, gif, bmp etc.) when i view this on its own folder using Windows Explorer or My Computer, and set the View in FilmStrip and/or Thumbnails, I can't see the Preview of those pictures, also the icon is like "unknown" for windows, and when I double-click any file, this is opened by my Paint Shop program not the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer which is built-in for Windows XP. Is this any particular sustems files of Windows that being damaged or corrupted? It's hard for me to re-format my hard disk because this will spent for me a long time to re-install my programs.

Need your help guys. Thanks in advance.

It's possible you've lost the association and that is why it is unable to display the pictures.
Please try the following:

Start -> Run -> regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

Close and reopen the window and try again.

It's also very easy to open certain types of files with a program chosen by you, rather than the system's default (after installation of some software). To do this, rightclick for instance on a bmp file, choose 'open with', then 'choose a program' (the option on the botom of the menu). A new window will open, in which you can point to the application you wish bmp files to be associated with. Check the checkbox beneath it, that says to always open this type of file with the chosen program. Click OK and you're done.

You don't mention if there are any error messages displayed when you try to view the files so the previous response would appear to be the most likely solution. If you run the regsrv32 command to repair the shimgvw.dll registry key this should resolve your issue.
You can also use a third party picture viewer, such as ACDSEE, to resolve this issue. The ACDSEE viewer will handle almost any picture format and is very easy to use. You can find them at

The most likely reason for this to happen is that when you installed your Paint Ship Program it became the Default Viewer and has changed the proprieties of Windows to only display in that program.

You don't have any corrupted files or anything else so all you need do is to follow the first answer and chose the Windows Viewer again and not the new Default viewer.

I am having this same problem, with no success yet with any of the solutions offered. The regsvr command says it succeeded but only 5 of the 15 photos folders have preview. Windows Picture and Fax is the default, however I also use HP Photosmart,which came with the new HP 6310 All-in-One Printer. Appreciate any other ideas.

I purposely disable the Picture and Fax Viewer because I prefer to use an external program for viewing pictures. If this and thumbnails are not working try this command: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll to
turn on the viewer and thumbnails.

To disable the function use: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
