Cant print after upgrading to W2KPro

By rlevesque ·
Dell Laptop - inspiron 3500. one of those with an external floppy that hooks to the parallel port.

Before on Win98, has a Deskjet 600C connected and worked fine. Had some problems with the registry, so we wiped the drive clean, hooked up the floppy and installed Win2KPro. Everything works, but now after connecting back up the printer and removing the floppy, it won't print, let alone see the printer. LPT1 is there and tests fine, and is enabled. Hook up the printer directly, and it can't seeit. I can print to any network shared printers, but any directly connected printer - forget it.

any ideas???

thanks,
Richard

Check the system BIOS to make sure that the LPT port isn't disabled. You could also check the registry to see if it has an entry for the LPT port. Navigate to;

HKLM\software\microsoft\windowsnt\currentversion\ports

Thanks for trying to help. LPT1 is enabled in the bios, and there is an entry for it in the registry. The floppy when hooked to it, works fine and the My Computer window sees the floppy as well. As a side note, when I delete LPT1 and reboot, it finds LPT1 and reinstalls it every time. But thats where this ends. I even tried a brand new bi-directional cable.

Try disabling the floppy drive (not the LPT port) in the device manager and saving it as a different hardware config. Then reboot with that hardware config while the printer is connected and on and re-install the printer software if need be.

Probable cause is the system recognizes the LPT port is where it found the floppy during boot so it captures the port for floppy use and does not recognize any other connection to that port.
