Can’t purge a print job in WIndows XP

    Locked

    by buffalotodd ·

I have a PC running Windows XP Professional that has an HP Deskjet 5650 printer directly attached to it. Two days ago it started printing something labeled “ASCII dump” or something along those lines. I tried stopping and restarting the spooler service, cancelling the print job, restarting the print job, I’ve even gone so far as to attempt to delete the printer through regular means and through REGEDIT but nothing. As soon as I reintalled the printer the same print job came back up and now the printer is frozen and won’t print anything! I need help!

Disconnect the printer from the computer.
Unplug the printer from it’s power source.

      Delete the printer.
Reboot the computer and log on.
      Delete any files in C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers
Download the latest drivers for the printer from HP.
Shut the computer down completely; do not take the reboot option.

Reconnect the printer and power it back up.
      Boot the computer.
Install the printer using the new drivers.

If that doesn’t work, try it again in safe mode.

Do it all in Safe Mode to begin with.

        How stupid is this?

This problem has happen to me and my co workers many times. Is XP and HP so brain dead that the only way to get a corrupt print job out is to uninstall the whole printer? As you know it takes about 40 mins to install a all-in-one printer. Keep asking the question till you get an inteligent answer!!!

I have be able to fix it but no fixed system. Hyst a lot of rebooting and messing around. I wish I knew the file that I need to rename in the spooler. Any one know that??
        Thanks

OK after my ranting I found the HP fix. It works and is easy!

      Go to Control Panel
      Choose Profromance and Maintence
      Choose Admistrative tools
      Choose Services
scroll to Print spooler and double click
      stop

      This will close spooler compleatly.
Ok back out and then go back to same page and click start
Spooler comes back to life empty!!

My first link out of google was to a site that showed the response to my ?? greyed out. If I paid I could see it.

        Like that’s going to happen!

        This solution worked perfectly.

I have used this to fix the printer before but forgot how. I have been searching the web for a long time and no website explained this! I found it before by calling HP support but now they wouldn’t give me an answer unless I paid to renew my warrenty. Thank you so much. I was at my wits end trying to fix this!!!!

This was a clean and elegant solution. It works and is so simple that it makes up for all the frustration that came before.

Tried these solutions but still can’t print.

I tried this in a cmd file.

      net stop spooler
      del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.shd
      del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.spl
      net start spooler

It worked several times then stopped working.

Also tried the control panel, services, etc. method described.

      I can not get a print. I have a Lexmark X1185.

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated

      Thanks,
