Can't release Ip autoconfig address

By Genwolf ·
I have windows 98 SE and a Kingston AtherX10/100 nic card. I am unable to relase the IP address and becuase of this no longer able to use my Linksys router. I have tried releasing and renweing severeal times to get the ip addres to start with 168 instead of 169 to no avail. Are the any other was to relase this address beside IpConfig commands?
Any suggesstion for correcting this problem are greatly appreciated.

Can't release Ip autoconfig address

You have not given us enough information here. What is acting as your DHCP server? The computer will default to a 169.254.x.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 if it cannot find any server to hand out ip addresses. The 169.254.x.x is a Windows default ip.

Essentially your nic is working fine, but where/what is acting as your DHCP server? If you do not have a server setup, then manually assign an ip address in your Control Panel --> Network and manually add a subnet mask.

IPCONFIG is the only command for WinNT and Win2000. WINIPCFG is used with Win95, Win98, 98SE, and Me. Ultimately the command is not the problem.

One possible solution (if your linksys is working correctly):
Reconnect your linksys router... manually change your computer to an ip of 192.168.1.101 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Then http into your linksys router http:\\192.168.1.1 and set up DHCP to hand out ip addresses. Then setup your Network Properties to Obtain an ip address automatically.
