I am trying to clean up an old system for my son to use as a weather station server. I have a program I had installed and now I cannot remove. When I uninstalled it, it asked for the cd, which I cannot find (it may have been pitched). I contacted the company, but no answer. Now, win installer randomly pops up with the box to insert cd. I tried to just manually delete the program files, but they are read only, and when I try to change the attributes, the file attributes revert to read only. I'm at a loss, and would appreciate the help.

If 2000 or xp .. install the command console (win cd -> i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons) after which, open MMC, add group policy, then browse to...
Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options....
and there Enable: Network security: Do not store LAN Manager hash value on next password change
and
Recovery console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders
The first is a security thing.. storing LANMan passwords is what gets passwords cracked in seconds to minutes when someone steals your sam file, and the other, allows you to have access to the full drive when in recovery console mode.
With recovery console, you can delete files without them coming back. (also turn off system restore before going into console mode)
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
