    Can’t Restore WIn98 from CD

    Locked

    by spm9928 ·

I recently got a call from someone who was doing a restoration from a WIN 98 restoration cd on a Compaq PC. When she got to the prompt to enter a product key, the product key on MS certificate she had only had 4 of the 5 required # fields, so we couldn’t proceed. Says that she had another recovery cd that came with the pc that she had used successfully 1 yr ago. The issue is how to stop the pc from booting up then going straight to the product key prompt, thus not letting us restore WIN 98 and to allow us to use the alternative restoration cd that we know works. Do I have to go thru dos to stop the faulty installation? Do I have to delete reference to the recovery startup in the startup file thru dos.

    PLEASE help

If you can get into Safe Mode, run Regedit and look for “ProductKey”. You will find her complete key in:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version under ProductKey

If the computer will start in Windows, go to http://www.belarc.com ,download the Belarc Advisor.exe, install and run. It will be located in the License Key(s) area. It will be the one w/ both letters and #’s. The actual OS reg. # will be numeric only but that isn’t the Product Key.

      Good Luck.
