Can't run any dos commands

By smills ·
Using XP Pro, when I select the command prompt window to appear and enter any dos commands such as "ipconfig, dir" it does not work. The message appears as follows:
ipconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file.
Other "DOS" programs result the same way.

When you open your command prompt, type "cd.." as many times as needed until you have ONLY C showing at the prompt. Try it again...it showed work now.
(If your not pointing to the C drive, type "c:\")

I would say the problem is with your path statement. Go to a command prompt and type "path" (no quotes). Look for the c:\windows\system32 (or c:\winnt\system32 depending on your installation) somewhere in the path output. If it not there then you must change your path statement. The command processor and ipconfig.exe reside in this directory and cannot be found if the directory is not in the search path. This directory is normally in the path by default but something might have removed it.

To change your path statement right-click on "My Computer" and click on "Properties". Go to the "Advanced" tab and click on "Environment Variables". In the "System Variables" box scroll down to the "Path" variable, click on it and click on the "Edit" button. Go to the beginning of the line and enter "c:\windows\system32" (or c:\winnt\system32 if that is where your windows directory is). If "c:\windows" is not there then add that too with a semi-colon between the 2 entries and after the c:\windows entry. Save the edit and OK your way out. You'll probably need to reboot to set the new values. Check your commands again.

Cheers.
