Can't run default disk defrag

By theav ·
I'm trying to help a relative with a problem he's having running the MS disk defragmenter. He's running Windows XP Home - SP2, and whenever he tries to load the defrager, he receives this message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to...".

I couldn't find any solution that made much sense on the Microsoft KB articles.

If the machine has been running slower and slower, it is probably full of spyware and viruses.

You can try updating the spyware & virus apps, restarting in Safe Mode and running the scans, deleting whatever they find, then rerunning the scans to make sure they don't find any more.

If you aren't able to do this, scan the infected drive from another pc.

However, it might be more efficient time-wise to save any needed information to another pc and then reload and update the ailing pc.

When finished, make sure they at least have Spybot and AVG anti-virus (updated weekly) and ZoneAlarm. Weekly updates and scans are a must.

I would do as the above answer suggest first but if that fails to work try running CHKDSK over the HDD first as it's possible that the drive has sustained some physical damage.

I'm taking it for granted that the person attempting to do this is logging on as the Admin as well and not a User with Restricted Rights.

Just a thought here before I log off this user isn't attempting to run Defrag from the CLI are they? If so it will not run as it's isn't a recognised XP Command they will need to open the main menu chose Accessories then System Tools then Disk Derangementer to get the option to run in XP.

Thanks for all the information! He did tell me yesterday that he knows at one time he had a worm, but as slow as his PC is, it's almost as if it's crawling with bugs.

I'll give all this a try.
