can't run msconfig

By litlegto ·
Hi,
I was using the msconfig Utility (System Configuration Utility) when I received this error:

An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes.

This now comes up every time I try to access msconfig.exe. I am the system administrator on this computer. I am the only user of this machine. I am assuming there is a registry setting that is keeping me from accessing this program. I can access it in safe mode but not in standard mode. I tried replacing msconfig with one off the WinXp CD but I still get the error.
Does anyone know what I can do to regain access?

Thanks for your help, Don

SYMPTOMS
When you try to apply changes in the Msconfig.exe tool, Msconfig.exe may stop responding (hang). However, an administrator may be able to complete the same operation without any problems.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if you do not have sufficient permissions to make the change in the Msconfig.exe tool. Msconfig.exe still tries to save the changes even if you do not have the appropriate permissions, and then retries this process after it receives an access denied error.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

I am running Win XP pro with SP2. I am the Adminstrator on this computer. I tried opening another administrator account but still get the same error. Is there a registry setting I can change? Do you think a Windows repair would fix this?

Thanks

Because there was no problem of running MSCONFIG in Safe Mode, it is most likely that a third-party security program (firewall or antispyware, for example) is the culprit.
Disable and enable half the startup programs at a time in MSCONFIG in Safe Mode to find the offending program. Then open the program to allow MSCONFIG to be run.

Reboot in safe mode, is the "Administrator" account appearing as well as your own logon account.

If not I'm not sure what to suggest, however if can you logon as "Administrator" by just clicking on the icon (the default XP logon)or using a password you used during setup, you have two administrator accounts.

You can use the "Administrator" access your logon and change your account. If it still shows as having full access I would suggest you create a new logon for yourself as that one has been corrupted by some mal software.

The rest is up to you, do you delete the logon (it will give you the option to backup)or do you just ensure that file sharing is enabled and transfer to your new account or just access the data when required?

I had problems with security on a friends XP Home even as Administor and Eqyuivalents. He had a virus that destroyed his security. Xp Pro has a security tool secedit, but Home does not. I ended up formatting and re-installing clean.
Have you run a full virus scan? is you virus scanner allowed to update itself? he had NAV and it couln't access liveupdate due to the infection.

Just a few thoughts,
peter

I am already using WinXP SP2. Should I try and do a repair with my Win XP Sp2 CD?
