    Can’t see Backup Domain Controller

    Locked

    by jman_diaz ·

    Hi Guys,
Has anyone seen the following behavior from a bdc?

I had a backup domain controller in one office which was being used to mirror our production DB. I transported it to a different location. Now i can’t see it on network neighborhood. Ican ping to it fine and can connect to it via ip but not by name. I also get an error(network path cannot be found) when i try to sync it with the pdc. The strange thing is that i have another bcd at that office and if i try to re-sync it on it(server) it does. But once i go to our main office where the pdc is it doesn’t The only PC’s that see that server are where the server is located.

Here are some of things i have tried already

I changed the ip to match our the offices subnet.

i removed it from the domain and re-added back from server manager.

    I added WINS

    I de-installed the NIC’s drivers and re-seated the NIC.

i check the connections they all seem fine.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appriciated

    Thanks!

    -jm

This sounds very much like a name resolution issue, as machines on the local subnet will connect via broadcast. go into WINS and confirm that there is an entry for the bdc. If not, as a test add a static address and see if that restores comms. If sothen check your wins settings on the BDC.

      1. Set up replication on the BDC. Make sure the REPL account can log on locally. Set up the replication in the server manager.

      2. Add a line to LMHOST file. Servername #PRE #DOM DOMAINNAME
