Can't See DVD Drive in Win2K Pro

By Mike.Corson ·
I have a Dell computer (running Widows 2000 Pro) with an NEC DVD-ROM IDE drive installed. It worked great for several weeks, then all of a sudden it stopped showing up in My Computer or with NT Explorer. The System properties shows the drive, but my Computer Manager tool shows the drive with a red circle with a white X inside it. The properties screen shows that the Library for this device doesn't exist. I have tried removing it in Device Manager and restarted the PC, but it still doesn't show up. Any ideas?

see if in control panel -> system -> CDroms -> NEC DVDROM properties is checked the "remove from this hardware profile" option if it is then uncheck it.
If this doesen't help
Try to reinstall the W2K drivers for this drive manualy if id doesen't work then try to unplug it (from everything) start the computer unistall everything that has to do with the DVD drive boot again and then try to install the drive again from the begining

While the information is valid, the NEC DVD does show up in System Devices just fine, and it shows that it's working properly too. It just doesn't show up in Windows Explorer or when My Computer is opened. Also, the NEC manufacturer DOES NOT provide any drivers. They say to contact the OEM vendor who says to contact NEC. I also happen to be a small OEM vendor who can't get any support from NEC.

Try the service pack SP1 - it does fix some problems with DVD.

Thanks for the information. I had SP-1 already loaded, but I reloaded it again just in case and got the same results. The DVD drive shows up under Device Manager, but will not display under Windows Explorer or My COmputer.

Thanks for the reply. I did eventually fix the problem, but it was done by changing the hard drive from a Quantum to a Western Digital HD. I had a Quantum boot drive 0 (8.2 GB) and a WDC 13.5 GB for drive D, and they don't seem to play well together. Once I swapped the drives out, the DVD showed up again. Don't know the relevance of Answer #3 though.

Thanks.

Greetings,

If it shows up in device manager but not in my computer, think that something got deleted. I'd reinstall Win 2000 Pro over itself. (Backing up my data first, of course.) That should replace any missing or corrupted files.

Good luck,

Maxwell
