A friend had Windows ME with three partitions. After he reformated C: and installed ME again, now he can’t see the other two partitions, D&E (D has been replaced by CD Rom). Can anyone tell me what has gone wrong and how to fix it please?

If CD Rom has been replaced by D: that means your friends format the whole hard drive and deleted all the partitions. usually if you have hard drive partitons (ex c ,d ,e ) and after all the hard drive partions cd rom takes the next letter. ifyou have 3 partitions it should be c:,d:,e: and the cdrom should be f:

go to your c: drive and check how big is u’r drive (ex properties) if its if it’s the size of your hard drive you don’t have any other partitions.

If he reformated the drive then he has deleted the partitions, check by inserting startup disk and booting the system and at the command prompt type Fdisk, choose number 4 to view drive info if their are no other partitions available, then he must repartition the drive using fdisk or a third party utility like partition magic

If you did what the other two have said then yes you have lost the drives however check that the drive letter allocation is not set at A to D make the last drive Z the other may magically appear on re-boot

Formating the drive should not erase the partition. The partition is removed with the fdisk utility ( or some third-party). I would check what Soulrider said which is to go to a dos prompt and type fdisk, then 4 to view the partition info. If c is the only partition and is using 100% of the drive space then you dont have another partition. Lastdrive=z in the autoexec.bat file is also a good check.

Try this: Go to device manager (right-click on MY COMPUTER, then properties, device manger tab), drill down to the cd-rom drive and hightlight it. Go to properties, then the settings tab. Change the cdrom reserve drive letter to start from F: and end at Z: Save settings and reboot your machine. You never know what might happen. Good Luck
