Cant send Internet Mail through Exchange

By joshg ·
Whenever we try to send mail to an internet e-mail address it comes back from the Exchange server as "Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure". We are however able to receive Internet mail. And the server has Internet Connectivity. The exchange server sits behind the proxy and the ports are mapped to proxy server and we are able to telnet and connect to POP3 and SMTP at the proxy server.

Any help would be great

Do you have the proxy client installed on the exchange Server? Not having the client installed would keep you for sending the mail externally but still allow it to come in.

Also look at the following KB article.

Hope I'm not being too simplistic, but do you have the Exchange Internet Mail Connector installed and configured properly? If that's all OK, you must also have the Winsock Proxy service running on the proxy server, and the Winsock Proxy client installed and properly configured on the Exchange server. Check out Technet article Q181847 - this gives complete instructions on configuring the proxy client. Hope this helps!

this isn't on small biz server is it?

sbs use's ETRN to send pop3 mail you have to find a ISP that will set up for etrn delivery (Good Luck, Most unix jockeys won't stop to help a poor NT guy).

Hope this helps you

The answer is as follows...
Create 2 ini files and do the following.
create a file called wspcfg.ini in the \exchsrvr\bin directory with the following
[STORE]
ProxyBindIp=993:192.0.0.1,995:192.0.0.1
ServerBindTCPPorts=993,995
Persistent=1
KillOldSession

Make another file with the same name wspcfg.ini in the \exchsrvr\connect\msexcimc\bin directory and put in the following

[MSEXCIMC]
ServerBindTcpPorts=25
Persistent=1
KillOldSession=1

Stop and re-start exchange and of course substitute the ip address in the first ini file to yours. This allows proper pass thru of the exchange smtp protocol while still behind the proxy.. Good luck
Mike

All of that was done prior to the problem. We decided to reboot the entire server instead of restarting the services. The server wouldn't connect to the network - some netbios naming problem. After that was resolved all problems cleared up.
