Can't send/receive e-mail from Dial-Up

By slk ·
I am running Window2000 on a laptop using Outlook 98 to connect to Exchange 5.5 server. On the network I can connect to Exchange fine, but I am unable to send/receive e-mail from dialing into the network via RAS. This was working fine, but suddenlystopped several weeks ago. I have checked the Outlook profile and everything appears to be setup correctly. What am I missing?

Can't send/receive e-mail from Dial-Up

by Ann777 In reply to Can't send/receive e-mail ...

Can you dial-up any other site successfully? Or, with a regular phone, dial the number that you are dialing with your modem and see if you get a response from the server. If you do get a response, then I'd recommend that you delete the profile that you use for dial-up and re-create it (sometimes the profile gets corrupt). If you do not get the normal tones from your connection, then have the system administrator check the phone line.

You might also check device manager and see if anythingis conflicting with your modem (or the IRQ is being shared with another device).

Have you installed any other hardware recently? re-check those for conflicts.

I have absolutely no problem authenticating to the network. I just can't get access to e-mail

I should add that I can authenticate on the network and can get files and even ping the exchange server when I dial in to the RAS. Once I open my outlook profile though I do not receive new mail and mail I send stays in the Outbox.

Seems the LMhost file is not there (on the laptop) anymore or has the wrong info.
it can not find the pc's and servers any more when dialing into the network. check with the administrator.

Other option check in the dialup properties that it specifies to see the whole network and not only the RASserver you are dialing into.

Leopold

I can see all servers on the network when I dial in - I just can't access my mailbox through Outlook.

Can't send/receive e-mail from Dial-Up

This suggestion is dependant on how your e-mail connectivity is set up. Is Outlook set for "Corporate Workgroup" mode, or "Internet E-mail" mode?
(If you are on Internet E-mail, then you are sending mail via SMTP, and receiving via POP3.)
I would connect via RAS, open up a DOS shell, and try to Telnet to the exchange server on the POP3 and SMTP ports, to make sure there is no packet filtering going on. If you are receiving name resolution of your Exchange server (ping servername gives you a good result), then maybe the port are being block somewhere (a switch, a new firewall, IP filtering on the RAS server, etc).
From the DOS shell, type:

TELNET exchangeserveripaddress 25
(you could just use the server name instead of the IP addresstoo)

Telnet will open, and you will (hopefully) see a line stating that it is Exchange 5.5 ESMTP. That is a good connection to port 25.

Try the same thing on port 110 to connect to the POP3 side of the mail server.
If you do not connect, thenmake sure the ports aren't blocked somewhere between the RAS server and the Exchange server.

One last note: if you use "Corporate Workgroup" setup, then you are communicating to the Exchange server using LDAP. That has ports too. I can't remember which ones, though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your detailed instructions. I was able to ping the server so I did not think that was a problem. Ultimately all I did was re-build the Outlook profile on the PC and then it began working again.

Outlook in corporate mode uses 4 different ports to communicate with Exchange 5.5. The first one is 135 (RPC mapper), the 3 others (IS, DS and SA) are chosen dynamically. If your ISP or corporate sysadmin installed a firewall that could be a problem. There is a trick published on MS site how to fix this dynamic ports in Exchange 5.5

Thanks for your comments. It was not a firewall or port issue as no one else in the company experienced the problem. It appears that there was some conflict with the Outlook profile name and the network profile. Once the Outlook profile was removedcompletely and then replaced with a new profile setup the exact same way but under the original profile name on the PC it worked!!
