I’m trying to sort an Advent 7016 laptop running xp home and apparently sp2. Although details say sp2 opening colour bars are green not blue – cannot re-install sp2. All sorts of problems – started by not being able to log on to AOL broadband. Now can’t drag and drop files or icons (can move windows around) can’t install some programmes – notably AVG, can’t burn to CD, can’t copy to memory cards on USB; have semi functionality for memory card in pcmcia, cant determine firewall status. There is some material of sentimental value from my friend’s deceased son which I don’t want to lose. Have carried out various virus / spyware scans without finding anything major.
Anyhow I have found a problem with the Remote Procedure Call RPC in services which isn’t starting and is set to network rather than local. When I try to change the setting through showing properties I get no response (not by right clicking nor using buttons in services window). I’ve tried from administrator in safe mode. I’ve also tried repairing RpcSs in the registry without effect. Anything I can do before going to a full re-install (I’ve tried repair and can’t access system restore).
