First, Microsoft has discontinued support or updates for Windows 98 and ME. The article was put out yesterday 7/12.

2nd, My nephew had this same problem. We ended up doing a hard boot. Basically, holding down the power key until the system powered off.

I am not sure that your system didn't shut down though. You say a black screen, which may mean it is shutdown. Can you provide more information on why you think it is still on?

Strange...had an error when I went to post my two cents and did a refresh and now see that my answer was posted 3 times. Anyone else having issues viewing Techrepublic with the new version of Opera v9.0 (my main browser)? When I view articles with this browser the comments made of the article are right near the top as are the toolbar (e.g. Print Article, Email Article, etc)

I had the same problem occasionaly. You can try with Microsoft knowledge base, in search field just type "windows me shutdown problem"...maybe this will help you. There is no universal answer to your problem, it also depends on hardware inside your computer, and of course, quality of drivers that you use...
