Can't start IE

By EStreetJerseyGirl ·
OK. I went back to Windows ME, because I came to the conclusion that the sould wasn't working because I've only got a Pentium 2 399 MHz. My fiance and I figured that the audio working when I first installed XP was just a fluke. In any case, I'm back to ME, but now I've got another situation (yes, I know, I'm cursed).

I can connect to MSN Messenger with no problems. I can install Windows Updates with no problems. However, those are the only 2 things I can do on the Internet. I can't run IE; when I click on the "e" icon, I get the following messages:

1.Error Message "Failed to load the Internet Connection Wizard Helper Component"

I click "OK," and get this message:

2.Error Message "Icwconn1 has caused an error in ICWUTIL.DLL"

I did a search for the error message and tried the suggestions to fix it (fix the tapi32.dll and iewhelp.dll files). They didn't work. I tried repairing IE, that didn't work either. Any ideas, or should I just give up trying to fix it and reinstall ME again?

My best suggestion is to forget IE, and install Mozilla 1.5

Alternately, which version of IE?
5, 5.5 or 6?

With an older PC, I would be cautious of installing IE6, I have seen many problems with older video cards.
Same for DirectX 9.

You can get the full installer for IE 5.5 SP2 from the browser archive at
The only problem is that it is a 75MB download.

I've been using IE 6 for quite a while now, never had any problems with it in the past. (Never had any problems with DirectX 9, either, for that matter!)

You say you tried a fix with the tapi32.dll and iewhelp.dll files, but in the Microsoft article liked below, they talk about some other files that you have to replace since this error is probably caused by incorrect versions (which makes sense if you downgraded).

Hope it helps!!!

That link didn't work, but I did find the page and did what they suggested. No luck; I'm still getting that error message.

You donot have to reinstall ME,you can use the IERadicator utility to remove IE,then start the download from the Microsoft web site, see the LitePC site for the download, you will remove all corrupt files and reinstall a fresh copy

Thanx, but for some reason, IE started working after I tried getting online with MSN Explorer. Crisis resolved! And, as a side note, I accidentally corrupted a system file from XP, repaired it, and now my sound works. Figure THAT one out.
