Cant update Windows update

By Borg7of9 ·
I have been trying to run windows update for a few days now, and on one win98 system, it will not work. It finds 8 critical updates, and says it had a problem with drivers updates, from there, I can not continue the update process.

Now, this system is always up to date with Norton, so I do not suspect a virus at this time, but I have no idea what to do. Just as a note, I can not also acess hotmail from this system either. Any ideas?

Try running only one of the updates at a time. May be that one of them is required for the other to work.

First try rolling IE back to a different state (uninstall). This may take care of your problem, I have seen this work on many wierd IE problems.
Then reinstall IE (if it is out of date) and try again

I have found that updating to the latest windows Scripting helps. if you click on the Troubleshooting Link on the left of Windows Update you should find a link.

Assuming the system is running well. Make sure no programs arerunning. Disable sceen saver, Suspend/unload scheduler. Virus protection/Firewalls may need to be paused or disable too. Is PCillin running at the Cmos level? After all these things are checkedand done, the service pack upgrades should execute. There are two service packs that need to run by them selves. Good luck!
