Career Advice

Hi
I am a lawyer who has decided to change careers and am coming to the end of a Masters in Information Systems Management at Stirling University in Scotland. The course is very much oriented towards management rather than IT skills, though I’ve done intro’s to Java, HTML, SQL, Networking etc.

I am 43 and am not getting any intervews for graduate training programmes with big employers.I need more training before being of any use to a big employer. I think I am not getting anywhere with these programmes because of my age. Salary levels in SME’s are low (less than ?20,000pa)so I am thinking of IT contracting.

I do not have any hard IT skills which I can sell in the job market, so I am thinking about doing an MCSE qualification. My ultimate aim is to get into IT project management (though I know this will take a number of years).

I would hope, after getting my MCSE, to be able to start in a support position somewhere and then within a relatively short time (12 – 18 months) move out into the contracting world.

Is this a realistic way forward? Anyone respnding please remember I am in the UK, though all help appreciated.
