Career crossroads decision

By Nagaraj Lanka ·
hi

i am from india and active user of tech republic website.i am facing a career dilemma .

i am an MBA majoring in internet technologies .i have around 1 yr of experience in uml based project design and management . i have also worked for product development through competitor product analysis and new feature suggestion and overseeing development . i do not have a technical 4 year degree in engineering disciplines , i am an MBA.

i am not being given any technical assignments although my uml and java skills are above average .

so , which career should i opt for

1) going in for technical certifications and aggressively update my knowledge in technical side like dotnet or java based j2ee technologies

or 2) go for an advance management degree and go for general consulting career.i have an opportunity to join the big 5 consulting companies this way but it will take 1 yr of slog for advanced management degree.

my company says it cant sponsor me for H1B ?
wat todo ? my aptitude is in technology management. i am equi proficient in both the paths ? please advise ?

I know that you say you are equally proficient in both paths, but think about the daily tasks and consider which job you'd be most happy doing all day every day.

Keep in mind that in larger companies UML and java assignments may not be given to people at the manager level -- they're expected to supervise work, not to actually do it at that level of detail. However, a technical background will be a big help if you're working on technical projects.

One thing you might consider is looking for a smaller company where the job descriptions are not as rigid.

No one can make this decision for you. You have to decide what is right for you. I hope it all works out for you, whatever you decide.

Codi - You have an MBA and your asking us? There is something missing in your chain of thought construction. The answers you seek should of been formulized a few months before you achieved your MBA. Apparently you have been in the slim channel of achieiveing what ever is placed in front of you. Rather than seeking your own goals to place in front of you.

With your education and experience you should be able to float a resume and have 15 excellent replies by return mail or phone call, all wanting to buy you lunch while you talk.

More educaton would get you a bigger, future salary, but in a management postion, not in a hands on position. Too, I read where you do not like the Company for which you are employed. So move on.

Above all, find out why you are asking us for information that you already have. Is it that you do not have the encouragement to reveal it? Been on a guided track too long?
Afraid to depart the secure nest?

These may seem like harsh words, but for a person to successfully fill the position you are seeking harsh decisions will be forthcoming. I know. I went from Tech to Senior Manager, not becasue I was educated, but becasue I wanted to progress and I looked for the oppotunities to advance to.

Good Luck.
