Career in Testing

By meenkoot ·
Dear All,

I am Meenakshi Balasubramanian and I graduated with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. I did my thesis on Parallel Programming. Right now I am looking out for jobs in and around NY/NJ only. I tried my luck for direct employment but unfortunately could not make it through. Right now I am thinking of getting into consultancy.

I would be really grateful if someone can throw some light reg career abt software testing. I love coding and ppl I have talked advised me not to take up a career as a software tester. I am not sure if it is ok to take up testing immediately after Masters when most of the ppl choose to be developers. Can someone kindly help me please.

Dear Meenakshi,

Software Testing is a wonderful and challenging world. If you have a flair for it, then you are in it.

There are tremendous opportunities in software testing now-a-days, especially Automation. Getting a certification in the same would help you a lot.

As a personal experience, I prefer being a tester than devloper. You tend to learn more in the earlier.

There are some skills one should have to become a good tester:
- 'test to break' attitude,
- Ability to find problems as well as to see 'what's missing' is important for inspections and reviews.
- Previous software development experience can be helpful as it provides a deeper understanding of the software development process, gives the tester an appreciation for the developers' point of view, and reduce the learning curve in automated test tool programming.
