Career Options - Chicken & Egg

By ross.bale ·
I have seven years experience in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Line desktop support mainly focussing on the desktop side, but with nearly two years server admin (Backups, monitoring etc). I have completed an MCP in Windows 2000 Professional and am working towards 2000 Server. I am finding it hard to move jobs (due to pending redundancy) as most places seem to want people with lots of server experience. I also have some Project Management & internal training experience as part of being responsible for ourWindows/Office 2000 Desktop roll out which I quite enjoyed but don't know how to progress into Project Management or a more server specific role - any suggestions or advice would be most welcome.

Career Options - Chicken & Egg

I'm not sure if you are currently employed or currently between jobs. I will assume you are currently employed. Aside from that, this is a great question.

First step is communication with your boss. Explain your desires. He can work with you in developing the expterise you may lack for a role change.

Step two, complete your certification for 2000 Server. This will show initiative, something most people lack.

Be prepared to take on more responsibility without a role change at first. Prove that you can handle the addiitional responsibility before expecting the role change.

Project Management experience is a great selling point at any role. Continue to look for opportunities to use and expand those skills.
