Career path advise needed

By hss100 ·
Where to next? This has been on my mind from quite some time ...

I'm a Sr. UNIX Administrator/ IT Architect and I'm feel I've hit a ceiling my tech skills. I've done informal team leading, project management, strategic management advising in my past roles over a 14 year period and am now looking to make my next big step.

I've been in contracting/consulting space for most of my career and have picked up substantial tech skills mainly in large corporate environments managing high end systems. I am thinking about moving into IT Management (I seen my share of incompetent management) and feel that I could make an impact in this area. I'm also thinking about formal project management but do worry that in the process I may blunt some of tech skills.

I'd like to hear some advise from people who may have moved into management from a technical role and what their experience has been. I'm looking at this from a financial and personal satisfaction point of view. I'm in my mid 30's now and am looking for some stability in the coming years and to build some type of retirement angle into adventure.

Any and all comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
