Career Path

By midniteone ·
I may have missed someone doing this before - in which case, apologies - but how do people see their career path unfolding? Where DO support people move on to - or do they just become senior support people? Can you see yourselves getting away from IT or are you hooked for life?

Reminds me of the old joke...

"Old informers never die - they're just put out to grass!"

Whether IT support staff fester, remain in situ, develop, or move on and up is very much down to the individual and up to the 'fall of the cards'.

My own personal experience was of Printing Administration that started in 1975. Computers became more and more part of the infrastructure of the Print trade (typesetting, graphic design, colour separation, transparency scanning, costing and estimating, market research) so you either sank or swam.

By 1980 I was a Print Buyer and if I'd not had a modicum of computer literacy by that time I would have definitely sunk.

What I did after that point was down to what made itself available and / or whatever risks I felt able to take.

One thing is for sure: if you don't look for it - it won't come and find you.

<Edited for bad typesetting - damn!>
