Cat 3 cable is just like Cat 5...just a lower spec (does not support most fast ethernet)

Take a look here:

Delete any spaces in the URL.

Good luck...hope this helps!

Cat 3 and Cat 5 are the same. They have 4 pairs of wires within.

Two pairs are activated or used. You may find that some of your Cat 3 or Cat 5 wiring are only wired with 2 pairs (or four wires) in each connector. While that technically is "not-standard" (to only connect the two active pair to the connectors on either end), those cables will function just as well as a complete 4 pair cable.

Sometimes the wires in a single cable are split and also used for voice -- in which case all of the cable is being used.
