Cat 5E cable running at 10Mb Half-Duplex

By dennistm_ ·
We got some Krone PremiseNet Cat 5E cables to use in our office network. Office network is running on a 10/100 hub and lan cards are all 10/100.
Our existing setup allows 100Mb, which is what it should run at. But when i use the new Krone cabling, the machine comes onto network only when I set the Network card to 10Mb Half Duplex. Auto setting does not work, nor do any other settings. Same computer runs at 100Mb using my old cables.
Anybody know what could be wrong?

I have seen this problem with Dell PC's, the solution was to download the latest NIC drivers from Dell Web Site for the card.

the PC's I had would not connect at all through a cisco switch.

my systems are working over 100Mbps full-duplex using my existing Amp Cat5 cables. Therefore the NIC drivers are OK! Problem arises only when using the Krone PremisNet.

OK well if your new cables are tested properly, it can only be one of two things, the 10/100 hub or the Network Cards.
It might be cheaper to download the drivers and try it; if you are keeping the new cable.

Old cable works, new cable does not.

Sounds like either a pinout issue or seating issue.

Pinout issues come in two flavors. First, bad production runs. It is possible the new Krone cables came out of production with incorrect pinouts. Verify against the standard.

Your site may have been built using non-standard station runs and the old cables may be custom built to match the non-standard runs. This is rare today, but was fairly common ten years ago. Again, verify against the standard.

Physical seating issues occur when mixing manufacturers. This should not be the case since the standard includes physical dimensions, but it still happens. Do a visual inspection of the seating as well as your sense of touch.

The Krone cable can be tested if you connect directly to the switch instead of via station jacks. If the cable is good, it should work device to device with no problem.
