Cat 6 issues, recommendations?

By TylerDurden ·
Our office is moving to a new building. I would like to wire the place with Cat6 as we will be in our new space for several years and I don't want to have to upgrade anytime soon.

Anyone out there have any experience with Cat6 that they could share? I'm interested in knowing about potential problems, issues, things I should be concerned about, etc.

Thanks.

Cat 6 issues, recommendations?

by Some Guy in Seattle In reply to Cat 6 issues, recommendat ...

The only problem I see with Cat6 is that it is not an industry standard. Some companies manufacture "cat6" as the next step for copper lines, but again, there is no standard. It would be unwise to wire a new facility with a cable to find out lateron that it has not been made the standard (many $$$ to replace).

Cat5 is standard however (EIA/TIA 568A or 568B). It is also standard for gigabit copper if you are interested in that (gig copper uses all 8 wires of the cat5 so that's value for money, ha!).

My recommendation is to investigate putting in fiber for your backbone if possible, and cat5 for your wiring closets and IDFs. If that's not an option, cat5 all the way. It's not going away any time soon, at least not for "several years".

Hope that helps,

To reply to jasonhartgrave@hotmail.com below,
"cat 6" has *not* been certified to run at a speed higher than cat 5. Cat 5 gigabit is the fastest copper line speed currently being used. And, again, Cat 5 IS THE STANDARD. CAT 6 IS NOT STANDARDIZED, THEREFORE YOU RISK WASTING YOUR MONEY IF THE TYPE YOU BUY LATER TURNS OUT TO NOT BECOME THE STANDARD.

Hope that clears things up a little.

I second the first answer.

Run Fiber for everything that isn't a workstation drop, and don't bother with CAT6, just go with CAT5.

I tend to disagree with the first two replies, why not put in Cat6, since the only real difference in Cat5 and 6 is that Cat6 has been certified to run at a higher speed? If cost is not an issue, fiber all the way but I see Cat6 as a cost effective way to increase bandwith. Even if it is not approved as a "standard" are you really hurting yourself by putting in high quality cable?
