Open the case and check the power and IDE cables. I suspect power cable has jiggled loose.....hence the inability to open.

Have you tried to open the cd drive before the Operating System loads?
If the problem is software related then the drive should open when it is not being controlled by the OS. You can test this by attempting to open the drive directly after pressing the power button or going into the bios.
Are you using Windows? If so then uninstall the drive controllers while in Device Manager. In Device Manager you will see a reference to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, click on the + sign next to this discrption, directly below, right click on the first sub description and uninstall, you will be prompted to confirm then reboot.
After reboot; Windows will install the drive controllers, you will be prompted again to reboot, do this then test the drive.

Have installed any virtual drives recently ?
Have installed any software which automatically created a virtual drive in order to complete the installation of that application ?
Some applications require the installation of virtual drives but these virtual drives are usually automatically uninstalled when the application has completed the installation process.
