CD & DVD & CDR help

by Murray Brydon In reply to CD & DVD & CDR help

I had this problem with a CD-R/DVD Combo drive. I was able to boot from a DVD but not from a CD, which prooved that it was the drive at fault and not XP.
I was told it was something about the drive needing aligned, but as it was still under warranty I got it replaced.

Every time I've ever seen a corrupted or unformatted error message, its always occured while trying to read burned cd's. You may have to replace your cd rom with a newer one.

if you have access to a windows 98 machine make a windows 98 startup disk if you dont then you can download one from bootdisk.com boot the computer with the startup disk using cd-rom support. try to access the cd-roms in dos. if you can access them in dos then its windows xp and you most likely have to reinstall but if you cant access them there then you most likely have a bad drive or some bad cmos configurations.

good luck

I have seen an "Update" that addresses this problem on Microsoft's Windows Update web site. Why don't you check it out.

CHECK THIS OUT:
CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q316529

If you are using Windows XP, this article is for you. You may have run into the problem that your CD-R/RW drive is not detected as a recordable device. If you have already tried a system shutdown, you may need to edit your registry using the settings in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article. Please remember to backup your registry before making any changes though.
