cd/dvd drive doesn't recognize cd/dvd

By dre_day_y2k ·
I purchased a HP about two months ago and I'm already having a problem with my cd/dvd drive. The computer recognizes the cd/dvd drive put nothing happens when I insert a cd or dvd. I already updated the drivers and re-installed the hardware and still nothing happend. It it a problem with the computer or the hardware?

I have seen this a couple times, but it was on a CD-ROM drive. Tried everything you did and it was brand new. As a last resort, I took a can of anti-static air, opened the door to the drive, blew it out and it worked. Also, if possible, check the connections to the drive, you never know they might not be plugged in to 100%. Unplug and plug them back in, in some cases, this will clean the contacts and give you a cleaner connection when it is plugged back in.

If this does not work and with everything you have tried, it just might be broken. Since you've had this two months you are still in the ball park of the 30 day rule.......if it doesn't break in the first 30 days you should be fine.

Hope this help,

If you just bought it then I wouldn't mess with it too much. You should have a one year manufacturer's warranty and if you open the case then the warranty is voided. If you have already opened it before then I would open it and check your connections. If it was an older computer I'd say just fiddle around with it yourself but I just bought a brand new HP and I know if I had problems I'd take it back in to have it looked at. This isn't really an answer to your question, just some advice

I agree, if you haven't opened it up - DON'T. Contact your nearest ASP or HP and arrange for warranty service. If you choose to open it up to fix this problem and void the warranty - you may wish you hadn't if a much more serious problem arises.

you may just simply have an autorun issue, perhaps it has been set incorrectly,, from a new unit I wouldn't guess that the drive or cables are bad or not seated right, unless you have moved things around in you case. check you cd settings and if that fails call compaq/HP tech at the number in your paperwork..being underwarentee they should fix it for you..
