cd/dvd player stops working - registry problem

By debbienc ·
My nephew has a laptop, and the cd/dvd player stopped working. A friend of his downloaded something to a flash drive and put it in his computer and installed it, and the cd/dvd player started working again, now it has stopped once again. It is a registry problem, but I have no idea what he downloaded to get it to recognize the drive. Anyone have any ideas how I could fix this so it will not stop working again?

A virus or rootkit?

by The Scummy One In reply to cd/dvd player stops worki ...

Run a virus check, and while you are at it look for a rootkit remover tool. If specific Sony dvd was watched on the system, Sony had put rootkits out, which in some cases would not allow a cd/dvd drive to function properly.

If neither of these are the problem, it is likely that a hardware failure has occurred

Sometimes when you install new software for some odd reason you lose access to you dvd/cd player, this is how to fix it.
Start, Run, type regedit, follow this
Next delete the upper and lower filters
restart your computer and it will fix your problem
