cd/dvd rom not recognized

Vista Home Basic.
Compaq Presario SR5010NX

Click on "computer" and E drive does not appear. Tried other cdroms and same trouble.Device manager shows it is installed. Have received messages that it has been disabled to protect my computer.
Any ideas welcomed

To run XP drivers or programs under Vista....

You need to RUN them in "compatibility mode".
This you can do by:
right click on the program or driver and select "properties > compatibility" and click on the "compatibility mode" box, here you can select which mode you want the program to run under.
Really Old Mycroft, i thought you would know that, unless you have not tried it or you have not got Vista.

try killing explorer.exe and relaunching. I have also seen where if a network drive is assigned to the d drive it can cause issue. Might also look at clearing the upper and lower filters in the registy. I have had luck with that on dells.

You can try "Regcure" to see if it will fix your problem...

I was able to go to HP and they emailed a solution that cleared the problem. It required deleting upper and lower filters in the registry.
