CD eject problem

By abanerji ·
I have a Compaq Presario Intel-P4 with 256MB-RAM. I have been using a CDwriter-***-DVD combo for several months. I recently updated to XP-SP2 and also patched my system from WinUpdate site. I also just updated Nero6-reloaded packages 1 and 3, without yahoo toolbar.

My CDwriter-***-DVD combo drive is suddenly refusing to open the drive, either from pressing the hardware switch on the drive, or right-clicking the drive in MyComputer and selecting eject. I am only able to open the drive by inserting a pin in the front-hole of the drive.

Is this a potential hardware issue, or some software conflict (driver, dll, etc.)?

Software conflict

Somewhere along the line the updates have corrupted the drivers for the drive. Being able to hardware eject the drive door (pin thru hole) indicates the drive is intact. It might be difficult to back track which update caused the conflict, maybe if you have a backup from prior to the update attempts will resurrect the drive.

I have to say it sounds like hardware.

There is one way to see if the drive itself is faulty, and that's to disconnect the ide cable and then try pressing the eject button on the drive.
Also you don'th have direct CD ir Indirect CD running in the background, as this can lock your drive which means you can't eject the drive until you tell the software to unlock the drive.

Kind Regards,

first HP has a couple of different firmware updates for cd combo drives with eject problems also my personal opinion of nero is @#$@%% there is a very good freeware writer that works excellent Nero (Ahead software) is a memory hog and invasive as well try CDBurnerXP Pro3--http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
