CD eject problem

By abanerji ·
I have a Compaq Presario Intel-P4 with 256MB-RAM. I have been using a CDwriter-***-DVD combo for several months. I recently updated to XP-SP2 and also patched my system from WinUpdate site. I also just updated Nero6-reloaded packages 1 and 3, without yahoo toolbar.

My CDwriter-***-DVD combo drive is suddenly refusing to open the drive, either from pressing the hardware switch on the drive, or right-clicking the drive in MyComputer and selecting eject. I am only able to open the drive by inserting a pin in the front-hole of the drive.

Is this a potential hardware issue, or some software conflict (driver, dll, etc.)?

Thanks,

It's hardware.

To verify this, does the tray at least rock or shift a little when you hit the eject button?

You can also shutdown the PC, unplug the IDE cable from the drive, and see if it now ejects to rule out any software issues.

If it should eject with the IDE cable disconnected, I would search for spy-ware or a virus before anything else.

If the eject button don?t work needier without OS loaded, definitely hardware issue! You must change your combo CD writer.

I submitted an answer under discussions. I'll do so here too. The pin in the hole indicates the hardware is okay, as the drive itself will eject. The fault is with the software updates that may have over-written the drivers or caused a conflict in the driver. A roll-back -- Backup reload to a prior date before the updates may restore proper function, unless the drivers are relly messed up.

if your laptop got FDD try to make a ODs bootdisk and boot in DOS and try the eject button. Or just try the eject button without going to XP eg press F8 when booting move your cusor to safe mode but don't press any keys it will stay there as long you don't press the enter key then try the eject button if it works then problem in Xp, if it doesn't your drive is faulty.

("Answer" button only?...no "Reply" or other?)
Sorry I dont have an answer to the problem....but instead have had the same problem for months. Luckily my DVD-CD combo drive fills all my needs, and problem is with CD-Rom drive. Push the button and it just thumps twice. There is no small hole to that I keep reading about. I am able to pull open the flap to see inside , and still no hole found there.
