CD-R Burner not recognized by burner app

By phi_alpha_nu ·
A friend of mine was given a workstation pc by his employer. It's running Win98. He bought a Sony crx230a cd burner for it. Kodak Easyshare software came with the burner. Easyshare does not recognize the Sony cdr. When he tries to burn a cd, it says there is no cd burner. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thank you.

First, does the Sony show up properly as a CD drive?

Does the BIOS recognize the drive?
If not, you may need to enter BIOS setup and enable the proper IDE channel.

If the drive does not show up properly in Windows, you may need to update the IDE driver for the chip-set on the motherboard.

Further, if a DOS mode CD driver is installed, it can inhibit the new CD drive from functioning properly.
Unless you NEED DOS mode access I recommend against having ANY CD-ROM driver loaded from Autoexec.bat or Config.sys

Next, what are the specs of the PC?
And, does it at least meet the minimum requirements for the software?

How is the CD drive connected?
Is it the primary slave?
Or is it on the secondary IDE channel?
Are any other drives on the same IDE cable?

Is the drive connected to the main IDE controller on the motherboard?
Or an alternate IDE controller.
Some extra IDE controllers on motherboards and plug-in cards do not handle CD drives well.

64MB is the minimum amount of RAM required. I recommend adding at least another 64MB.

Is the CPU at least 400MHz?

Next, check for software updates.
Sony lists a few:

Windows recognizes the cd burner. Lists it as a Sony drive. The Kodak software does not detect the drive. I might add that he had over 300 spyware objects detected by adaware. He also has 64mb of ram. This computer is probably 5 yrs old.

Chas ideas are right but another thing that resolved this for me once was simply putting the CDRW on it's own ribbon as the master.

My Iomega hotburn required a patch to recognise a new drive i purchased. Could your problem be similar? Look for patches to your burning software.

For your software, goto the site that makes it. They have updates / patches for newer cd-burners. Install the patch, reboot, all will be well.
