Locked

CD-R or CD-RW dll

By slick_1317 ·
Can anyone help me with my new project which requires me to detect whether the cd that will be use for burning is a CD-R or CD-RW? I'll be using Visual Basic 6.0 for dev't, any DLLs/OCX that may be needed in detecting or even burning a
file(s) to the CD-R?

Hi,

Not 100% sure about this, so apologies if it's incorrect.

The following key will only exist if a CD/DVD is in your drive:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Current Media
and the value of "Media Type" says what kind of disk you have.

Hi Slick,
Had another look on my machine and the 'Current Media' key only exists if there is a disk in the drive, once the disk is ejected, the key disappears. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP1.
Saying that, I have had a look at another XP machine, which is quite locked-down, although it has a CD writer in it, it doesn't have the key mentioned.
Do you have the recording tab when you go into properties of the drive? Have a look at this MS article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529
I think we used this to lock the machine down, so users couldn't write cds without using a 3rd party app.

Hope this helps a little more!

@Bizzo
hi! thanks for the info but I have verified your info but have found out that the ".../CD Burning/Current Media" does not exist in the Registry...Can you verify it again if it does exist,mine is not? What OS are you using? Again, your posting is valuable for me...God bless you more!=P
