Win98SE w\ Acer 8x CDrom drive, built from spare parts... Everything worked for about a year...
Then the system had a hiccup... and the CDrom drive stopped reading burned CDRs (haven't tried CDRWs) but reads originals just fine. Copies tested inanother system... they're OK. Installed another CDrom drive from another system (Hitachi 2x) and it works fine.
I reinstalled W98SE over the original (no reformat) but this didn't fix it either.
I tried to update the driver by downloading 610a211.exe from driver site. I ran the SETUP.EXE that was supplied, and rebooted. It inserted a long line in my Config.sys that refers to VIBE-CDD.SYS, but it didn't fix the problem.
Assistance would be greatly appriciated...

At first I didn't like this answer. Luckily I didn't rate it before I tried the other response. In the end, I've decided to replace the drive. Thus, this was actually an acceptable answer.
Thanks for the update... I was sure that this would fix it. Unfortunately, it didn't. But it was a good answer none the less. I guess I should simply replace that old drive. =^(
