CD Rom and CD Burner Drives are Missing

By twentynineroses ·
I thought I was upgrading my Acoustica burner software today and it promted me to uninstall my previous program. I did that, but now when I go into My Computer, there is no cdrom drives! I have a G drive and an H drive which are both missing. Can you explain why my two cdrom drives are missing from my computer?

Which version of Windows?

First, verify that the drives are detected by the BIOS when the PC boots.

If they are detected by the BIOS, then you have a device driver issue.

For Windows 98 or Me, download and install the latest IDE driver for the chip-set on your systems motherboard.

For Windows 2000 or XP, first, in device manager, try deleting the IDE controller(s) that the drives are connected to.
Re-boot, and allow Windows to install the hardware.

If you still have problems, you might need to update the IDE driver.

Assume that one or both drives are CD-RW drives versus CD-ROM drive.

CD burning software installs its own device drivers for CD-RW or DVD-RW drives. I have seen more than one instance where corrupt burning software drivers have caused Windows not to recognize optical drives.

Check to ensure drives are recognized in BIOS.

Before applying TheChas's other recommendations, completely remove Acoustica and any other CD burning software. First step is to uninstall software. If you have Nero or Easy CD Creator, check their web sites to determine if manual driver removal is required for your version.

If drives are not recognized at this point, go to TheChas's suggestions.

I forgot a possible simple fix. Try response #4 first. It involves deleting 2 registry entries.

Check the website of the burner Software for updated drivers or patches. There may also be some help provided there describing your problem.

The Filter registry entries are corrupt. You need to remove them to restore CD drives.
