CD-ROM and CD-RW not found

By Zanka.gn ·
I'm running Windows Me. After installing 60 GB hard drive I can't find the CD-ROM or the burner. I have checked the device manager and they are not there. How can I get them back? Does the BIOS have anything to do with this problem?

Yes the bios does have something to do with this. First you need to make sure that all drives are jumpered correctly. If you have one hard drive set it to master and the burner to slave and put them on the same cable. Set the other cd to either master or cable select and put it on it's own cable. If you have two hd's set the 2nd to slave and put it on with other cd. Then go into bios and have it autodetect all. If the bios doesn't see them windows won't either so check your jumpers again.

First check to make sure all the cables are connected. Then make sure your jumpers are configured correctly. If they still don't show up in Windows check your Bios. Sometimes in the Bios you need to set the ide channel that the drives are connect toto auto before they show up in Windows

Assuming your system BIOS can handle the hardware, and assuming there is no reason that the system shouldn't be able to see the new devices (ie: jumpered properly), one trick you could try is to force Windows to redetect all hardware on the system by deleting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum folder from the Registry. Be sure you have the drivers for EVERY device on your motherboard and every driver for all hardware first! Give it a shot if nothing else works.
