Cd rom Auto Run

By john.cb1 ·
When i put a cd/dvd in one of my 2 drivers the cd/dvd does not open automatically. It does not allow me to either install a program or give me the choice on what to do.

It does not display what cd/dvd is in the drive.

I have tried 3 Options.

Option 1

Right-click the CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties.
Select the AutoPlay tab.
Select the appropriate autoplay preferences.

What autoplay prerences do i need for it to detect any cd and then give me the option to chose.

Option 2

I have checked through Administrative Tools > Services > Shell Hardware Detection > Return this service to Automatic, and it is set to automatic.

Option 3

Start > Run > Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\Cdrom
AutoRun = 1

But still i have not managed to cure this error

What do i need to do to change this error

What I think you need to do is replace the cd-rom. It sounds like it has gone out already. Try booting your system from the cd-rom drive leaving the one in question the only one connected. If your system doesn't see this drive at all and you've already checked in the bios that it is enabled then you will need to replace the cd/dvd-rom that is giving you problems.

Good Luck

A few things, go into the control panel and system click on the cd drives icon if the cdrw is shown delete it and reboot. It should find it and reinstall it. If that dont work check the maker of the drive to see if there are updates for it. You have two cd drives? Try removing the cable from one and see if the other works. Be sure to turn off the computer first and unplug it! Did both drives work from the start? If so what has changed in your computer, did you install any new software? A cable could have worked itself loose. Is this a home computer, if not there are user restrictions that will not you install software or use the drive. You could buy a cheap cdrom for 10 or 20 and put it in just to see if works.
